Our patrol was out walking the local area when we saw that stuff of legends ( from the scout paper... the Blond Girl Guide )...really... she was waiting for a bus !!!!! As the only French speaking member... I was appointed to go over to her and chat. We got on famously... with confusion... she said she was at the Jamboree for L'Arene... and I thought she meant she was La Reine.... The queen !!!! We exchanged names and addresses.
I am still in touch with her and have stayed with her family many times. This is an interesting story and can be expounded.
The second memory...... some of us ( about eight ) were scheduled to go to Salzburg to stay for a further period after the Jamboree with scout families. Almost at the conclusion we were advised that as there was no one from that town who was prepared to commit to looking after us.... the project was cancelled.
We were all bitterly disappointed..... and almost at the last minute we were approached by a young French scoutmaster with an invitation to join his group and he would make sure that we all had billets in his home town of Cavaillon in the south of France in Provence !!!!! It was agreed and we left with him.
We all had a wonderful time. I was chosen to stay with the scoutmaster... because his family did not speak English... and I was able to speak some French.
There are many aspects of that stay which changed my life.... the food.. ( don't forget England was still rationed and austere ) ...Living with a French family.... eating ice cream at the bistro ( the taste of real ice cream !!!!! ) ... On arrival being offered glasses of pastis.... not knowing what it was , but liking it, and the very woozy feeling afterwards !!!!
I am still in touch with this family and last visited them about six years ago.
